Μια βόλτα στη Μακεδονία μήπως και ανακαλύψω αυτό που κοντεύω να ξεχάσω κι εγώ και οι περισσότεροι έλληνες. Την ταυτότητά μας. Ποιοί είμαστε οι νεοέλληνες πού πάμε; Μια στάση στο Δίον Πιερίας μπορεί να βοηθήσει ; 

Το Δίον ήταν μια αρχαιότατη πόλη στρατηγικής σημασίας και μια από τις πιο φημισμένες μακεδονικές πολιτείες. Η γεωγραφική θέση του αρχαίου Δίου τοποθετείται στους ανατολικούς πρόποδες του Ολύμπου, εκεί όπου σήμερα βρίσκεται η ομώνυμη κωμόπολη. Όπως μαρτυρούν ο Στράβωνας και ο Λίβιος, το Δίον «πόλις ουκ εν τω αιγιαλώ του Θερμαϊκού Κόλπου εστίν εν ταις υπωρείαις του Ολύμπου, αλλ' όσον επτά απέχει σταδίους». Η πρώτη γραπτή αναφορά στο Δίον είναι στον Θουκυδίδη, ο οποίος την αναφέρει ως την πρώτη πόλη από την οποία πέρασε ο στρατηγός της Σπάρτης Βρασίδας το 424 π.Χ.

The village owes its name to the important sanctuary dedicated to Zeus (Dias, "of Zeus"), leader of the gods who dwelt on Mount Olympus; as recorded by Hesiod's Catalogue of Women, Thyia, daughter of Deucalion, bore Zeus two sons,Magnes and Makednos, eponym of Macedonians, who dwelt here in Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus. The ruins of the ancient city lie within the modern city's boundaries.

The first mention of Dion in history comes from Thucydides, who reports that it was the first city reached by the Spartangeneral Brasidas after crossing from Thessaly into Macedon on his way through the realm of his ally Perdiccas II during his expedition against the Athenian colonies of Thrace in 424 BC. According to Diodorus Siculus, it was Archelaus I who, at the end of the 5th century BC, gave the city and its sanctuary their subsequent importance by instituting a nine-day festival that included athletic and dramatic competitions in honor of Zeus and the Muses.

The modern village at the site was called Malathria until 1961, when it was renamed to Dio.

Palaios Panteleimonas (Greek: Παλαιός Παντελεήμονας) is a mountain village of the former municipality of East Olympos, which is part of the municipality of Dio-Olympos, in the Pieria regional unit, Central Macedonia, Greece.
